Mike Dewine Increases Ohio Hunting and Fishing Prices

Ohios’ Governor Mike Dewine revealed his Budget Friday (3-15-19) and his Budget includes increasing certain Hunting and Fishing License Prices! The Spokes man for the ODNR Jason Fallon Said that the Price increases would add an additional 4-Million Dollars a year. Fallon also said that the majority of the money would be used for Ohio’s Fish Hatcheries, and for adding more public archery ranges. This increase in prices will not be enforced, until the Budget is Passed!

GET YOUR License Now!!! It’s not a huge price increase, but it is still more than what it used to be. Could this turn Hunters and Fisherman way from their loved sport? Will we see a drop in people purchasing License in the near future? This past year already had a significant drop on the Deer Harvests Number, could this effect those numbers even more?

I Want to hear your Thoughts about the Price Increase! Is it good or bad? Will the Hunters and Fisherman of Ohio Benefit back from this price increase? Let me know what you think in the comments below!

  1. I think the increase should be o bbn out of state hunters. Every other state is outrageous for out of state hunters. I definitely think it makes it harder to get new people into hunting and fishing.

        • What benefit are the fish hatcheries? What do they hatch and where do the fish go?
The only fish I ever saw or tried to catch that I know of were rainbow trout. That was in the New Lexington resivior. The fish I caught and ate tasted like crap so I don’t bother to fish for them anymore. As for archery ranges I never used them either. I have a target in my backyard and that is where I would normally shoot. If I want real hunting type practice I would meet with a buddy and we would go stump thumping in the woods.

        • The outfitter business are what is killing Ohio’s deer hunting. Leasing up all the land paying insane prices for it. Then cycling as many hunters through over hunted areas for$ 2500.00 and up. One outfitter had 180 deer hunters in camp in one season.

      • Who care, that is still cheaper than anywhere else. Try to hunt any other State and see what the cost is.

        • Thats very true, but my main concern is that it is going to decrease the hunter in Ohio even more. A lot of people already don’t want to pay what it costs now.

          • People are gonna spend the money to chase Ohio giants. Big buck states like Iowa are $600 for a tag and that’s if you get drawn for one. Ohio is still a non-residents cheapest option to hunt giant deer…

    • I am in total agreement with you on that. Other states triple the cost or more for out of state hunters. Good ex. is Colorado checked into a Elk tag last year. Resident cost was $80 Non Res. was $800. I know a lot of people that come from WV, SC, NC and Fl. to SE Ohio to hunt White tail deer.

    • I agree with you 100%!!!!!! I have lived and hunted in Ohio my whole life. Everywhere I hunted growing up (in licking county) is off limits now due to out of state hunters leasing the property’s. It is almost impossible to find hunting ground in my area for my 3 daughter’s and myself. I don’t think I should have to pay higher rates to hunt with my children considering the fact……

  2. Yes alternative route I think they should charge the horse riders and bicycle riders to ride on the state parks

  3. This is outrageous with this there will be less hunters and less new hunters only thing that will happen is even more poaching I will not be voteing for Mike in the future with these new tax’s on hunters and the new gas tax

  4. The added fees should be passed along to out of state hunters and fisherman. I don’t pay for hunting due to land owned but a father with a couple boys would not pay for them to hunt due to the high cost of license and tags . Hopefully they will consider this price increase before they lose a generation of hunters .

    • Agreed! I think that it will decrease the number of hunters. As a sport we want to grow, but if they are going to charge us more, then we aren’t going to grow.

  5. What a shame . Just when we suffer from hunter recruitement , we hit another reason not to hunt. I have hunted and supported Ohio for more than 20 seasons by spending countless paychecks just to hunt over crowded state land and over pressured deer. Sadly, I have decided that the satisfaction is not worth the cost of admission.

    • Hey brother if you ever want a place to hunt private land, we are doing paid hunts starting this fall. Maybe you can spend those paychecks and kill a really nice one! I hate seeing that hunters are turning away from Ohio because of this price raise. I will do what I can to help the sport!

    • Mike Dewine is a money rapist ! I live near killdeer and they’ve totally ruined that place. Most of it , you can’t even step foot on it unless you’re a big money guy from Columbus . Every month there is at least 2 people charged for trespassing at killdeer. Public land for rich politicians. I think it’s way too much for a family. When my boys were younger I would take them deer hunting. I could only take them 1 or 2 days because of my work schedule. Cost over 100 dollars to take my boys deer hunting for a day just in licenses. I do not support any increase on prices especially for the youth!

  6. I don’t mind paying the price if they can show the $$$$ goes back into wildlife areas for hunting and fishing, purchase new land, releasing more pheasant, stocking ponds. They should also require others that use said areas to buy permits, bird watchers, horseback riders, hikers. There are areas around me that have signs saying it was purchased with money from the sales of hunting and fishing license but we can’t hunt the area, only open to bird watchers, open that land for hunting as well.

  7. I always said, whatever it cost me to go to another state to hunt, That’s how much that out of state person should have to pay to come to Ohio and Hunt. Tic for Tac, It would be an easy system to do and Ohio would make more money.

  8. Yeah raise the prices and lets see how many more poachers come out of the woods.and then bag limits drop because the poachers are not going too pay there will be more poachers this is plain stupid.

  9. Shame on you Ohio
Miss management to the fullest. In the past
Some counties get 6 deer tags and wipe out the herd.
Now Hocking county deer herd is at all time low. Hunters don’t come to our county for that reason
Now you want to raise price to make up the difference.
    Shame. Shame. Shame
Like to see everyone stop buying hunting license until someone takes responsibility and start caring about our wildlife

    • It definitely Makes it harder. I you ever want some private land to hunt, we are going to do paid hunts this year so just let me know if you’re interested.

  10. I paid $270 for my license to deer hunt in Ohio this year even though I hunted on land that has been owned by my family since the 1960’s. I am willing to pay this because I am able to afford it and want to hunt with my family while I still can. However, I also pay for a license in my home state too. We need to encourage growth of hunting since it is on the decline and not everyone can afford these amounts.

    • In Ohio you still have to buy a license to hunt if your family owns the land u can only claim landowners if you or your parents on the land

    • The way it is now its 258 $ to deer hunt if you are out of state that needs to be the same for youths they get a break in there home state . The parents of the youths are using their deer tags and not buying a new tag that is the problem with the calling in to check your deer . Then about fishing license most people are going going to have a problem with that price the problem is the stocking of fish is tout is not necessary more offshore structure is needed in all of Ohio’s lakes we have been stocking predator fish and the bass crappie and bluegill have no place to hide from them the bass fishing at our inland lakes is the worst anywhere. don’t just hand the money to the hatchery and think that is going to fix the problem. They will just do the same thing cheap fish to stock as they do now . If the fishing is good price is not a problem but the way it’s going anytime you raise the price it’s not going to be good show us what you are going to do with the money that is going to help the fishing then we can see it being done you will get a big thumbs but not just a raise in price and nothing being done just look at what north Carolina is doing with plastic pipe and concrete!

  11. Between raising the cost of licenses and the fewer number of private lands to hunt either because it’s now leased or people won’t let hunters hunt, it makes one question weather it’s worth it or not. DeWine needs to look at other ways to fund his objectives, unless he’s putting it all back into Dept. Of Natural Resources. Raise taxes on cigarettes, will raise more money there than on hunting/ fishing licenses!

  12. I did’nt read anything about raising the price for seniors. I think it should stay the same for them, because they have put in for a lot of years, and can barley afford it now.

    Danny Hooten syohatdh@bright.net

  13. I agree with sending the fish license money to the hatcheries but why is the hunting license money going to archery ranges? Why isn’t the shooting range at Deleware open yet? It’s been closed for years!!! It’s the closest public range to the city of Columbus.

  14. That’s a crock of shit, If Ohio needs more damn money, Than just legalize marijuana, and call it good, Don’t go after all of us hunters, Like we don’t already pay enough, What is this state getting to???? OMG. Really

  15. This is all bs it not going to go to fish hatcheries And building archery ranges. That’s bs no one really knows where that money will go. It will go into brand new vehicles boats and other bs they thing they need instead of maintaining equipment they already own. Look at how many parks close or not taken care of. This Jason Fallon needs fired. Don’t let the Republicans influence you…

  16. people on fixed incomstevees will be affected and as a senior i already am thinking of hanging it up and so will a lot more baby boomers

    • Hey if you ever need a place to hunt, just let me know and I will take care of your man! I want to see the hunting numbers increase, which will actually get the state more money, instead of causing hunters to turn away hunting.

  17. Why don’t we start charging the farmers for there legal poaching permits?? Maybe they’ll be more apt to allow more hunters if they had to pay for there kill permits. In return, more property to hunt, more opportunities, more hunters.

  18. We need to raise out of state license prices. In Alabama, a 10 day tag for out of state people is $187.

  19. Make bird watchers pay for waterfowl stamps as well. They trash a lot of marshes and areas around out where I live, why not charge them something to preserve what they are passionate about as well?

  20. Guess I’ll be tagging less deer. I used to buy 5-6 tags and give meat to ppl in need. But now I’ll only buy 1 tag. If I need meat I’ll have friends and family that will shoot them off their own property without need of tags. I dont need more then 1 deer a year now anyway. And I know many ppl that will just poach them and cut them up in their garage. Hunting and fishing is becoming a rich mans sport when it should be free!

  21. the Outdoors people will never see a dime of this it’ll go wher not needed an for equipment not needed somewhere or for something stupid nothin will change guaranteed

  22. While i think its a petty move by a state goverment stuggeling because of an income.tax cut they cpuldnt afford in the first place, to say these small increased will make a hunter stay home is a poor argument, and Dewine knows it. Before you argue, how much do you pay for 1 arrow, or bolt. Hell most bow hunters spend more than the increase on a single broadhead. Look at what we spend on guns, bows, clothing, equipment. No, its not going to stop hunters, but if we as hunters arent prepared to make a stand via vote or by taking a season off as a group to make a statement, we can expect more of this.

  23. I’d be on board with the price increase if they would A) legalize necked rifled cartridges, B) not restrict the number of poles I’m allowed to fish with, and C) open a trapping season for bobcat.

  24. I would like to see them use some money toward making the roads better in killdeer and making more access roads to more fishing and hunting spots . I don’t mind paying extra cost but I’d sure like to see them doing something with the money like buying more public land for people to hunt and fish . Places have got really over crowded in my opinion .

  25. why don’t you enforce cat owners to buy tags for their cats like dog owners do. you would make a bundle of money there, most cat lovers, me excluded have 2-50 cats which leads to more cats. I know im tired of the cats around my house ripping our tractor seats and stuff up, and dying of some kind of sickness . nasty. leave the hunters alone , were tired of picking up the tab for your pockets to get heavier.

  26. You know you lived in a screwed up place when you face a harsher penalty for harvesting a deer without a tag (and god forbid it be while trespassing) than crossing the border illegally into this country.

  27. Here’s what we need to do, my opinion.
Don’t raise our fees. Instead use the resources we have. I’m not sure what it cost to run a fish hatchery , but man it with welfare’s people. We all pay for them anyway , so let put them to work. Then as far as archery’s same thing with donations at time of license purchases . I’m just saying, hope I’m not offending anyone….

  28. It is sad , that what used to be a cheap recreational family tradition is now turning into another rich mans event.
I fear the additional cost will cause the chances of being caught illegally to be considered by more violaters already out there.

  29. The way it is now its 258 $ to deer hunt if you are out of state that needs to be the same for youths they get a break in there home state . The parents of the youths are using their deer tags and not buying a new tag that is the problem with the calling in to check your deer . 30. With as many out of state hunters as we get i think they should raise their fees to $150 for the license and 350 per tag. Or place a lottery draw at $400 for them to even be allowed to hunt here why punish ohio hunters

  31. I disagree with the price increase. My father taught me to hunt over 31 years ago and I have taught my 2 sons and seeing them succeed at it is better than Myself successfully harvesting an animal. Not a big increase in cost? I’m seeing 25 to 50%.

  32. I think its pure bullshit. They always throw it at outdoorsmen and gas and alcohol and tobacco. Why do outdoorsmen fit in that group? Alcohol and tobacco is a sin tax, but hunters are controlling game population therefore saving a lot of vehicle collisions with wildlife. They always claim money will go toward hatcheries and new shooting facilities. Well as far back as I can remember I don’t recall ever seeing any new shooting ranges around anywhere i go nor has the fishing got any better. So I call BULLSHIT. They will continue to walk on us because we let them. Lets get back to being the country boys that we are thought to be and stand up to these sumbitches.

  33. So when hi get a get feed up an stop hunting then the deer over populate please tell me their plan for that? Don t have to worry about pot holes if you have to swerve to miss a deer every 10 feet.

  34. So when we get feed up an stop hunting then the deer over populate please tell me their plan for that? Don t have to worry about pot holes if you have to swerve to miss a deer every 10 feet.

  35. It’s a slap in the face can’t afford to get kids & young hunters & fishing now no one benefits ridiculous

  36. crop damage permits are a nessary evil. the dept of ag. should contribute to odnr. to help with funding. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS IN THE IRRESPONCIBLE WAY THE STATE HANDLES THE MONEY THEY REICEVE. ANY DEPT. THAT HAS A SURPLUS OF FUNDS AT THE END OF THE FISCAL YEAR MUST SPEND IT OR LOSE THE NEXT YEAR. state spending must be brought under control before raising taxes and permit fees. former state employee and I know this is true.

  37. Why tax the people that already pay their taxes in ohio? Should be the out of staters that have extra money to spend

  38. Definitely ridiculous! I definitely won’t vote for Dewine ever again! I can see a dollar increase but 5?!

  39. You put a Democrat in office, your gas just went up because he raised that tax , now this, get used to it, cause it aint gonna stop

  40. I think this is B.S. people that use BIKE PATHS should have to pay a fee to use the paths, Hunters and fishermen pay enough money to ENJOY their hobby. While the state builds multi MILLION dollar paths and charge NOTHING for people to use them. !!!!!

  41. I dont think the price should increase. Some people live on a budget and have a hard time coming up with the money now to buy their license. I think if the price increases they are gonna lose alot of people hunting and fishing.

  42. If they raise the prices people are gonna quit buying them so they are gonna loose money. Leave them alone. Let people enjoy themselves. Its the only thing you can do that dont cost you an atm and a leg. You want people to enjoy nature but if you make it to where we cant afford it how can we enjoy it. Its bs!

  43. Im ok with it if it puts more people out there fixing up the hunting and fishing areas for the hunters and fishermen and boating areas….and not putting more money in the states pockets..just my opinion…

  44. This is bullshit mike dewine need to keep the price the same that is enough dam money going for all the fish hatchery if he want them to have more dam money he should give it to them out of hos own pocket and leave the working people the hell a lone you want to take the money to give you a rise and you don’t do a good job its bullshit mike dewine

  45. Great Job Ohio. Are young won’t be able to enjoy hunting or fishing because they won’t be able buy there license because there Mom or Dad won’t be able to buy there license so they can enjoy life.

  46. I dont understand why they dont update the campgrounds with full hook and add some pools or water parks I have took my Family for 25 yrs and camped in Ohio State Parks I have fished my whole life in the state of Ohio my sons and I attended the Hunter Safety Course and took them to many youth hunts I think If you are a Ohio Resident and have a current Ohio fishing license or hunting license that you should be able to vote were the money should be used. Visited Indian Lake this past year and there is plenty to do there and the campground has a pool and some full hook up sites I have attended the Hueston Woods Halloween Campout and it is packed all 3 weekends and very difficult to get a spot sure seems that some updates could be afforded , Outdoors man for the Buckeye State

  47. Oh i disagree with the raise….cant wait til election time….first the gas tax now this….they should be raising the rate for out of state only….plus i dont shoot bow so what those archery ranges gonna be any good for people that dont shoot bow…pure bullshit…think ole Dewine is leaning left on us

  48. I read mostly about hunting but let’s talk some about the fishing. Fishing is down on many inland lakes. Put some money into stocking fish other than saugeye. Kids shouldn’t have to go to some lakes and fish all day without catching something other than a bluegill. Fishing is not like it used to be in my opinion.

  49. This will only turn law abiding hunters into a wildlife regulation criminals. It’s not just a sport for the wealthy. Many folks depend on the success of a hunt to feed their families. I was raised on venison & other wild game.

This will only increase the burden on some to feed their family’s !!!
Thanks for hurting those who depend on hunting.

  51. I call Bullshit on this. Greedy bastards they are. Want to raise gas tax that didn’t work now pick on the Fisherman and your Hunter’s , they must want a pay raise.

  52. This is a big crock of shit it seems like they don’t want you to hunt the game wardens are always looking for a little reason to give someone a ticket and fuck them

  53. I own property in Washington county, I have to buy an out of State license to hunt on since I am not a resident. Grew up there, but being punished because of stupid laws. I allow others to hunt on the property that live in this area. I could start charging them $270.00 a year for the privilege. But then I’d be just as stupid as DeWine and the Money Grabbing ODNR Administration. I will make a wager with anyone from Dewine’s administration, or the ODNR representatives, that not one dollar of this money ever makes it back into programs that benefit Ohio Hunting and Fishing. Any takers?

  54. That is a RIP off just because the state is hungry for money there better be better benifits with package

  55. This is outrageous, I lived in Georgia for 7 years and you bought your fishing license every 2 years and they were $18. They had fish Hatcher’s down there too.

  56. Come on people it’s a few dollars. You pay more than this when you go get a biscuit from McDonald’s or for a weeks vacation. So what is the issue with a few dollars more for something you love to do and you can do it all year. Just saying…

  57. I would like to sign a petition for the raise of out of state hunting prices not the loyal resident hunters

  58. I think that the increase is ridiculous. A lot of people has stopped getting a fishing license because of the last increase. Myself when I was living in Florida I could get a fishing license for salt water as well as fresh water and it was $32 for the pair, but yet a nonresident license is $32 each but is good for an entire year. Plus they say don’t eat anymore dear because they could be infected with the zombie virus and now they want to increase the price. Plus a lot of us work a lot and only get a chance to go fishing a few times a year. This is why more people are going to pay lakes and private property so they don’t need a fishing license. Just sad that Ohio is becoming a money hungry state. Raising everything around us. Sometimes I think they do it to push us to other states to live. Like Florida no city or state taxes coming out of your paycheck because they have a food tax instead. Everyone pays taxes that way instead of the working class.

  59. I think if you lease property to out state hunters you need to have an outfitters liscense period! leave the tags and stuff alone

  60. They need to do audit first before adjusting prices. I know that there is money that is being spent on dumb and unnecessary shit. Then after the audit is over make every bit of the information public knowledge of how it was and what it will be.

  61. It’s going to cause my family not to want to hunt anymore I’ve grown up hunting and fishing I son like the fact there trying to raise it they already did where we can’t shoot a doe on public lands after gun which is dumb because where I hunt there is little bucks and all does

  62. 100% agree!! I moved out of state for 19 years and purchased a non-res every fall, and STILL would have suppirted an increase in non-res fees. OH is approx $400-$500 cheaper than IL and IA.
