FeatherNett Outdoors wishes you a happy and healthy new year! There is about a month left in the 2018-19 Deer Hunting season, which means it’s almost time for the offseason. This Post will be covering how to Plan a Successful Deer Hunting Offseason. Planning your offseason out will help you accomplish more in the offseason and have you more prepared for the 2019-20 Deer Hunting Season.
I love planning out my offseason, because “If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail” – Ben Franklin. [bctt tweet=””If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail” – Ben Franklin” username=”feathernett”]Â This is a little motto that I live by, not just for hunting but in my personal life too! Hopefully planning your offseason will help you be more successful during season!
What Didn’t get done Last Year?
Before starting to plan your offseason you should ask yourself, “What Didn’t get done last year? This will help you to know what needs to be done this year. Did you need to move a tree stand? Did you want to put in a food plot? Didn’t get to set up the number of trail cameras that you wanted?
Now that you have figured out what you didn’t get done last year, you can begin to focus on what needs to get done this year. Now that you have a new year, you can plan out those couple of weeks to plant that food plot, or get more trail cameras to set up.
What needs done this year?
I like to start planning by reflecting on my hunting season. A good thing that you guys should start doing is, journaling and taking notes on all of your hunts. Below are some questions that you can answer to help understand deer movement.
- How many deer did you see?
- What were they doing?
- Where did they go?
- Why did they go there?
- What were the weather conditions outside? Temperature, barometric pressure, wind speed, and wind direction?
Another thing that you can do after answering the questions above is rating each hunt   1-10. After a couple hunts you will start to see patterns. After you get about 5-10, 10/10 hunts, you will start to see the patterns and be able to adjust accurately.
A small reflection before starting to plan out your offseason will help you to make accurate adjustments, and you will be able to close in on a mature buck. This uses the data that you have gathered over that past season to your advantage.
After reflecting and making adjustments from previous year, you will find the perfect spot that will produce mature deer year after year. Now that we are done with the reflection, we can start listing off tasks that we want to get done this offseason.
Action step: Grab a piece of paper and start listing off 10-20 jobs that you want to get done this offseason to prepare for next season.
Important jobs- Some are more important than others
After you are done listing off 10-20 jobs to get done, list them out in order of importance. What jobs are going to make the biggest difference in your next hunting season? Once you are done ordering your jobs, focus on the top 5 jobs that you have ordered. Now you will have the rest of the offseason to focus in on these jobs.
It is hard to make time to do these jobs, maybe they are big or maybe they are smaller adjustments, but we get you have lives and families. You have almost 7 months to get each job done, so just focus one month to complete each task. These five jobs should put you in a great position for next season.
Action Step: After you have your top 5 jobs picked out and ordered, break each down into smaller tasks that you can do to make completing this job easier.

Planning For Success
I know I said this quote earlier, but I am going to repeat it because I think that it is very important, “If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail.”- Ben Franklin”. [bctt tweet=””If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail – Ben Franklin”” username=”feathernett”]Â This is the part that we are actually going to mark dates on the calendar when we want to get these jobs done.
Setting a time frame will help motivate you to complete this job by that time. I have a really nice $10 planner that I use to plan out my deer hunting offseason. it is easy to focus on important dates, and schedule it around other seasons during this time of the year, such as turkey season, Fishing, and Bow fishing.
I promise that you will thank me later, you won’t only feel really organized but you will accomplish a lot by doing these easy planning tactics.
Action Step: Purchase a planner that you can use to plan you Deer Hunting Offseason, and mark convenient dates that you can get these jobs done.
Summer Work = Fall Success
From here on, it is all up to you. You can take action and set yourself up for success in the Fall, or you can not plan and maybe only get a few things done in your offseason.
Think about it…. All the professional hunters you watch on TV have planned out their season, when to move tree stands, When to plant food plots, and when to actually go on their hunt.
Planning out your Deer Hunting offseason will make you feel prepared for your season. This will make feel confident going into your season. To be successful in this sport on a consistent basis requires ALOT of sweet equity, and if you aren’t willing to put in that sweet equity, then you will not likely get the results you want.
