What to Consider for Best Hunting Gear for Cold Weather!
- Warmth: Having Clothes that are able to contain or generate warmth while hunting is essential for being able to sit for a long period of time in the late season cold weather!
- Waterproof: Getting Wet is one of the quickest ways to freeze yourself down to the bone! Make sure that you have gear that is water proof, but also breathable so that you don’t sweat and freeze yourself from the inside!
- Windproof: Alot of the time, cold late season hunts come paired with a freezing breeze! Having clothes or dedicated layers to block the wind from reaching your neck, and core is critical! If you are able to keep your core, feet, hands, and head warm, with a tough mentality, you will be able to survive the full duration of a hunt in the single digits during the late season!
5-Hunting Cold Weather Hacks:
5. Insulated Treestand Platform:
An Effective hack that I came across was insulating your Treestand Platform! Cold feet is one of the biggest culprits to a short hunt during cold weather! Your Rubber boots on an ice cold treestand platform is a quick way to get cold feet! Take along with you any kind of insulate material that you can put over your Treestand Platform! Any foam or carpet material will work great! I prefer carpet, because it doesn’t squeak like foam does, but either work great for keeping your feet warmer!
4. Bow-Hangers:
Many wouldn’t think of it, but simply hanging your bow or gear up can help keep you warmer! Think about your Aluminum bow, and how cold they can get during a hunt. If you hold it in your hand or have it resting on your lap, it will make you cold! Checkout some of our Favorite Bow Hangers Here!
3. Hott Snacks:
Make sure you eat a nice warm meal before your sit, but also don’t forget to pack a few snacks as well! An Empty stomach during a cold sit, when deer are moving much are perfect recipes for a weak mental state and worse, a short hunt! Pack yourself a thermos with your favorite warm beverage: Coffee, Hott Chocolate, Tea Ect.
2. Clothing Strategy:
Often times one of the biggest fights during single digit hunting weather is about staying Dry. Often times hunters will work up a sweat commuting to the treestand, and they lose the battle before it even begins! Fight the Temptation of wearing your entire wardrobe walking to the treestand, and just walk in your wool clothing base layer!
-
Sock Strategy:
Picking out the right socks for cold weather hunting is Just as important as picking out the right boots! Wet feet equal cold feet! If you struggle with wet feet, try a liner sock! This is a sock designed to be breathable and warn under a heavier sock! You will also just want to buy some new socks! Using the same old warn down sock will not keep your feet as warm as some brand new fluffy wool/thermal socks!
